Smallbusiness.com

I stumbled across a cool website this morning that I thought was worth sharing. Called Smallbusiness.com, it’s a Wikipedia-type site that is designed specifically for providing small-business advice. It doesn’t have the amazing depth of Wikipedia, but I thought it was still pretty cool. In a few minutes of poking around, I was able to find:

Overall I thought the site was pretty interesting, although like I said, it is lacking in depth a little bit. Also, as with any other wiki-entity, any information or advice that comes without a named source, I would recommend taking with a grain of salt. Some material on the site may be written by those with expertise in the field in question, while other pages may be written by copywriters who know as much about the topic as they can find on the Internet in five minutes. So, like with any written material I suppose, reader beware.

Those complaints aside, Smallbusiness.com could be a useful tool not only for finding information pertinent to managing your own business, but also for marketing your services. There is virtually no information about promotional marketing on the site now, but were that to be amended, a businessperson browsing the site for ways to advertise his/her company could be provided valuable leads. Smallbusiness.com is the second result returned by Google when you search “small business,” so the chances of someone ending up there looking for business advice are decent.

Until next week,

MIKE FACT OF THE WEEK: I finally abandoned my suburban roots and moved into Philly about two weeks ago. I haven’t made much progress so far in getting settled (I don’t even have Internet set up yet), but I have made decent headway into overspending at fun restaurants and watching weird daytime cable movies with my girlfriend all weekend, so overall I’m breaking even on productivity.

MIKE’S MOVIE FACT OF THE WEEK: No matter what your girlfriend says, “Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen” is unwatchably terrible.
