If you’re not familiar with poutine, it’s a dish made up of french fries topped with cheese curds and brown gravy, which was created in Quebec. Apparently, the Montreal Alouettes Canadian football team thinks poutine is best served in a replica helmet, because that’s the team’s latest stadium promo.

That’s right, it costs $90 Canadian, which is roughly $70 American. That’s pretty steep for a vessel out of which to enjoy poutine, but you have to remember that it comes in a replica helmet, too. Once you wash the grease and gravy out of it, it would make a perfectly acceptable addition to any Alouette fan’s home.
It’s sort of like the mini batting helmets MLB teams serve ice cream in, only much, much larger. Also, it ties in a regional favorite food, so you get double the Montreal vibe when you order it at the stadium.
It’s also a little bit like the “Thor: Love and Thunder” promotional popcorn bucket that was announced recently. Moviegoers could eat popcorn out of a replica hammer, which they could then take home and admire forever.
Both of these are big steps up from run-of-the-mill food containers. Whether they will prove popular enough that other sports teams and franchises will follow suit, offering much larger popcorn buckets, drink carriers, etc., remains to be seen.
But, in the meantime, people are buying them.

And, if they’re not buying them, they’re at least talking about them, giving more publicity to the Canadian Football League down here than it usually gets. The helmets have gotten a considerable amount of play on social media, with coverage on the web as well.
Also, Montreal advertised that the helmets are only available in a limited quantity, and to get one you have to buy the poutine, giving the product that sweet exclusivity factor that attracts so many. It could just be enough to push one hungry-yet-undecided fan off the fence and into the poutine line.
Bravo les Alouettes.
